“Reports of Living Pterosaurs in
the Southwest Pacific” (in a peer-
reviewed journal of science):
“The search for living pterosaurs is
cryptozoological. Cryptozoology is
the study of ‘hidden’ or ‘unclassified’
zoological species or possible species,
especially in the early discovery stages.
A number of expeditions in recent
years have collected and analyzed
eyewitness testimony, primarily
in Papua New Guinea.”
Jonathan Whitcomb in the
Youtube mini-documentary
“Brief Introduction to
Living-Pterosaur Investi-
gations” (early 2015),
including parts of some of
his interviews on Umboi
Island, Papua New Guinea,
with native eyewitnesses of
the nocturnal ropen (the
expedition itself was in
2004, with Luke Paina.)
Whitcomb was a forensic videographer,
working for attorney firms in California,
before he moved to Utah in 2014.
He was interviewed by the Canadian TV host Richard Syrett
on May 5, 2012 (and later in 2012 on Syrett’s radio talk show)
Whitcomb investigated a sighting
in Lakewood, California, in 2012
Jonathan Whitcomb was consulted by both Destination Truth and Monsterquest, before their expeditions in Papua New Guinea (American television shows).
Clifford Paiva (physicist in California) and Jonathan David Whitcomb conducted deep analysis of the Ptp photograph, in early 2017, concluding, at
least at first, that it was a genuine image of a modern pterosaur. In November of 2018, however, Whitcomb withdrew his support for the photo.
More information is needed, especially about provenance.
