When a young man, he played the part of Mephistopheles in Faust. Somewhere there is a picture of him in costume--- dashing and quite handsome! Injury from gunpower explosion  At the age of ten, he experimented with gunpowder while his parents were away from home. He caused an explosion which almost blinded him for life and caught his clothes on fire, leaving him so seriously burned he thought he was destined to leave this old world. While waiting for Dr. McGinnis to arrive, he said, “I know I will go to heaven!” J. B. Spaulding and Sons  When fourteen years of age, he and his brothers formed a company with their father, known as “J. B. Spaulding and Sons.” For ten years he managed the Nursery in Springfield [Illinois] which they owned. His unusual memory enabled him to identify most plants and trees by the botanical names fifty years later. Previous Page Next Page Index
