[After the passing of this second wife, Albert Starr
Spaulding once whispered:] “Dear Pearlie, dear
Pearlie!”
We soon moved to Long Beach, where he subdivided
what is now North Long Beach. He also developed a
large part of northwest Los Angeles, a few years before
this time. Streets he named are still to be seen in these
areas: Spaulding, Genesee (for the name of the county
in New York where his father [James Benedict Spaulding]
had lived).
God prospered him, and he, in turn, gave much to the
charities he loved. For twenty-five years (in the 1920’s
and 1930’s), he gave an average of $2000 a month to
God’s work.
Father also had a restaurant in Long Beach, for a few
years, with this name in the sidewalk, at the entrance:

A the youngest member of the family at this time, I
remember the delicious candies in this restaurant. I
recall Father insisted on cleanliness throughout . . .
